XCIII. GROFÉ, Ferde: Grand Canyon Suite

XCIII. GROFÉ, Ferde (1892-1972)

Grand Canyon Suite (1929-31)
1. Sunrise
2. Painted Desert
3. On the Trail
4. Sunset
5. Cloudburst
Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra
Ferde Grofé, cond.
(35:36)

Certainly Grofé's best-known work.

He had an active musical career playing viola in the LA Symphony, and -- perhaps his most important gig -- becoming Paul Whiteman's chief arranger for his famous big band -- including re-arranging Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue many times.

Each movement is a tone poem of the Canyon, painted in gorgeous orchestral colors.

The video features many gorgeous shots of the beloved Canyon.

[try the Grandview Trail if you want to get away from people -- or better yet, hike to the bottom and the take the Clear Creek Trail eight more miles (a punishing hike of more than 16 miles!)]

A few of my own photos:
