CCLIII. BRUBECK, Chris: Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra

CCLIII. BRUBECK, Chris (1952-        )

Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra (2003)
1. Paradise Utopia
2. Sorrow Floats
3. James Brown in the Twilight Zone
Paul Garza, bass trombone
Moores School Chamber Orchestra
Alex Poliykov, cond.
(17:53)

There is a difference -- a bass trombone has a slightly larger bore, bell and mouthpiece than the tenor trombone. It often has an additional valve to faciliate the lower pedal tones. These can be heard in the solo introduction of the third movement and the final cadenza.

Chris graduated IAA the year before me. A tremendous talent -- like his dad -- he not only plays bass guitar and bass trombone, he's a gifted composer and orchestrator -- as can be plainly heard here.
