CCLXXVIII. MENDELSSOHN, Felix (1809-1847)
Mendelssohn never considered this a symphony; It was always Lobgesang (Song of Praise), Op. 52. Posthumously, the cataloguers pushed into the #2 position, which Mendelssohn himself was reserving for the Italian (#4) after revisions.
1. Sinfonia
In a Maestoso tempo, the unison trombones engage in a call-and-response with the rest of the orchestra. In a few moments, an Allegro tempo takes the theme and varies it, breaks it down, and ends triumphantly. A little clarinet cadenza introduces the next section (0:12:43):
A beautiful, lilting 6/8 shifting between G Minor and Major. Mendelssohn's skill at orchestrating (thickening and reducing textures) is evident throughout.
