Commissioned by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge for performance in the Library of Congress. Stravinsky was paid $1,000.

Apollo -- the Greek god of music -- is visited by three muses: Terpsichore, muse of dance and song; Polyhymnia, muse of mime; and Calliope, muse of poetry.

Scored for a string chamber orchestra, Stravinsky was primarily inspired by the music of Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687):
