At first, Rochberg wrote in the twelve-tone style. At age 48 -- after the tragic death of his teenage son -- he became drawn back to traditional tonality.
There are definitely moments of atonality in these fantastic variations for solo violin, but he seems more interested in seeing how far he could spin away from the Paganini (1782-1840).
