With a rival opera company in town (London), Handel turned to writing oratorios, hoping to draw a better crowd. Saul -- written earlier in the year -- was a great success -- this work, not so much. Who can know why one succeeds where the other fails, but Israel is one of Handel's greatest large-scale works:
