DI. BARTÓK, Béla: Three Village Scenes

DI. BARTÓK, Béla (1881-1945)

Three Village Scenes (1926)
1. Wedding
2. Lullaby
3. Lads' Dance

Three versions:

Györ Girls' Choir
Budapest Chamber Ensemble
Antal Doráti, cond.
[scrolling score]
(11:36)

Ensemble vocal Askesis
Ensemble instrumental de Pôle
Eduardo Lopes, cond.
(13:59)

Camerata Singers
New York Philharmonic
Pierre Boulez, cond.
1. Wedding (3:55)
2. Lullaby (4:50)
3. Lads' Dance (2:47)

A scrolling score, a live performance and a superb Boulez recording ...

Originally written for voice and piano, Bartók rewrote it, enlarging the single voice part to four or eight, and orchestrated it.

It was also first a five-movement work in the arch structure [see here] which he favored so often, but cut down to three movements for the commission from the New York League of Composers.

A remarkable work, vastly underperformed ...
