Originally written for voice and piano, Bartók rewrote it, enlarging the single voice part to four or eight, and orchestrated it.
It was also first a five-movement work in the arch structure [see here] which he favored so often, but cut down to three movements for the commission from the New York League of Composers.
A remarkable work, vastly underperformed ...
