Born in Kiev, fled Russia for France and Switzerland; studied with Alfred Cortot and Nadia Boulanger (1926-28).

Gives up composing at age 29 (1941) after a serious illness, and becomes a conductor.

Icare is a revision of L'Envol d'Icare -- a 1932 work which had a group of instruments tuned a quarter-tone higher. The revised version changed the instrumentation as well as numerous changes to orchestration details.
