Josephine of Clary-Aldringen, wife of Count Christian Philipp Clam-Gallas, was a student of Johann Baptist Kucharz, a composer, organist and mandolinist who was the first to play the mandolin in Mozart's Don Giovanni in the premiere of 1787.

The couple invited Beethoven to their Prague palace, and Beethoven composed this for her.
