CMLXXXIV. MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus: Quintet for Horn, Violin, 2 Violas and Cello, K. 407

CMLXXXIV. MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus (1756-1791)

Quintet for Horn, Violin, 2 Violas and Cello, K. 407 (1782)
1. Allegro
2. Andante
3. Rondo: Allegro
Katy Woolley, horn
Bogdan Bozovic, violin
Mark Holloway, viola
Rosalind Ventris, viola
James Barralet, cello
(12:40)

Mozart was good friends with the virtuoso horn player, Joseph Leutgeb. This is the first of many works he composed for the great Leutgeb, who was playing on a natural horn, meaning there was a lot of lip-bending and hand-stopping involved.

The two violas add a dark, burnished feel to the work.
