Beethoven's 17 string quartets are divided into three periods:

1. Early (1-6)
2. Middle (7-11)
3. Late (12-17)

During my Senior Year at the Interlochen Arts Academy, I first discovered the Late Quartets and Op. 131 held a particular fascination for me, and quickly became a serious study.

The seven movements are played without pause.

They even made a film about it.
