CI. SCARLATTI, Domenico: Sonata in A Minor, K. 175

CI. SCARLATTI, Domenico (1685-1757)

Sonata in A Minor, K. 175
Jean Rondeau, harpsichord
(4:03)

Not to be confused with Alessandro Scarlatti, his father.

Domenico is quite on the edge between the Baroque and Classical eras (note his birth year is the same as Bach and Handel). He wrote almost exclusively for keyboard.

He must have been a fantastic performer. As you can see and hear, his music placed incredible demands on the player. It is said he had a "battle" with Handel in Rome at some point -- Scarlatti was declared greater on the harpsichord but not as good as Handel on the organ.

He wrote 555 sonatas of this type.
