CCCXV. BACH, J.S. (1685-1750)
"The Hunting Cantata" (secular) was written to celebrate the 31st birthday of Prince Christian of Saxe-Weißenfels, who enjoyed a long hunt, and then threw a banquet where the cantata was performed as Tafelmusik.
**
The text draws on classical mythology and the vocalists play the parts of Diana (soprano I), Pales (soprano II), Endymion (tenor), and Pan (bass).
1. Recitativo (Soprano I): Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd!
My only pleasure
Is the merry hunt!
2. Aria (Soprano I): Jagen ist die Lust der Göttin
Hunting is the sport of gods
Hunting is the joy of heroes
Two corni di caccia sell the hunting motif ...
3. Recitativo (Tenore): Wie, schönst Göttin
What, loveliest goddess?
Do you no longer know him who once shared your life?
4. Aria (Tenore): Willst du dich nicht mehr ergötzen
Will you no longer delight
In the snares
That love has set!
5. Recitativo (Soprano I, Tenore): Ich liebe dich zwar noch!
Indeed I love you still!
However today a great light shines
That I must first
With my loving kiss
Welcome and serve.
6. Recitativo (Basso): Ich, der ich sonst ein Gott
I who am wont to be a god
In these domains
Lay down my shepherd's staff
Before the sceptre of Christian's rule!
7. Aria (Basso): Ein Fürst ist seines Landes Pan
A Prince is the Pan of his country
Just as the body without the soul
Cannot live or bestir itself
Accompanied by three oboes, associated with pastoral music.
8. Recitativo (Soprano II): Soll denn der Pales Opfer
Shall Pales be the last to homage pay?
No! no!
I too would do my duty
9. Aria (Soprano II): Schafe können sicher weiden
Sheep may safely graze
Watched over by a good shepherd
A most well-known and popular Bach aria ...
10. Recitativo (Soprano I): So stimmt mit ein
So let all join in
And complete the pleasure of this day!
All hail, Sun of the Earth
because Diana keeps watch by night
Ye rays of joy
Bring delight to us both
