CDXXIX. BACH, J.S.: Sonata #3 in E Major for Violin and Harpsichord, BWV 1016

CDXXIX. BACH, J.S. (1685-1750)

Sonata #3 in E Major for Violin and Harpsichord, BWV 1016 (1720-23)
1. Adagio
2. Allegro
3. Adagio ma non tanto
4. Allegro
Shunske Sato, violin
Menno van Delft, harpsichord
(15:29)

1. Adagio

The violin part flourishes with 32nds and 64ths, bathing the accompaniment in a continuous sonic cresting of waves ...

2. Allegro

There is something very sing-songey about this melody, answered in the violin at the fifth:

3. Adagio ma non tanto

The only movement in the minor (C-Sharp). The flow alternates between straight 16ths and 16th-note-triplets. This is exquisite music:

4. Allegro

Joyous music which uses the violin's open E string to great effect (similar to the E Major Partita, BWV 1006 [see Post L].

The interplay between the two instruments is fantastic.
