CDVIII. BACH, J.S. (1685-1750)
1. [Recitativo] (Tenore): Es rufet seinen Schafen mit Namen
2. Aria (Alto): Komm, leite mich
The three recorders and the siciliano rhythm in the aria provide the necessary pastoral touch:
He calleth his own sheep each by name and leadeth them away.
Come lead Thou me
I long to be
In Heaven's fertile pasture
My heart cries out
Yes, longs for Thee
My Shepherd, dearest Master
3. Recitativo (Tenore): Wo find ich dich?
4. Aria (Tenore): Es dünket mich, ich seh dich kommen
The aria calls for a violoncello piccolo.
Where may Thou be?
Ah, leave not me in sadness!
O hide Thee not from me!
I yearn for Thee
Break forth, Thou dawn of gladness
I seem to see Thee come to meet me
And enter by the open door
With faith I welcome Thee and greet Thee
Be Thou my Shepherd evermore
I know Thy voice so kind and gentle
So full of love and tender care
It fills my heart with righteous anger
When doubting ones their Lord forswear
6. Aria (Basso): Öffnet euch, ihr beiden Ohren
Two trumpets are called for to underscore the Death and Devil text ...
But they comprehended not what it was that thus the Lord unto them had spoken
Ah yea! We mortals are oftentimes devoid of hearing
When our deluded senses donot heed what He is saying to us
Thou fool thou, know indeed, when Jesus speaks to thee
For thy salvation it will be
Open, open wide and hear you
Jesus' promise then will cheer you
Death and Devil are laid low
Grace and gladness will attend you
He will love and well defend you
You who share His Cross and woe
7. Choral (Coro): Nun, werter Geist, ich folg dir
Unusually, the final chorale adds the three instrumental voices (recorders) to the normally a cappella chorus.
Come, Holy Ghost, help Thou me
To seek Thee and to follow Thee
Thy Word my guide and inspiration
To mould my life for my salvation
Thy word, a glorious morningtar
Is shining fair from Heaven far
So, firm in Faith no doubt can sever
I hold me true to God forever
Hallelujah!
