CDX. BACH, J.S. (1685-1750)
Lightly scored for the four soloists, choir, flute, oboe d'amour, violins, violas and continuo, this Christmas cantata (third day) does away with the usual introductory choral movement and begins with the soprano aria, in a swaying 12/8.
The flowing flute line compliments everything, and the entire movement is crystaline in nature.
1. Aria (Soprano): Süßer Trost, mein Jesus kömmt
Conform sweet that Jesus came
Promised long and long expected
Heart and Spirit, joyous be
That the Lord has chosen thee
To His Heav'n with His Elected
2. Recitativo (Basso): Erfreue dich, mein Herz
3. Aria (Alto): In Jesu Demut kann ich Trost
Rejoice thee now, my heart
And bid the cares depart
Which long has troubled and oppressed thee
For God hath sent His Son
His dearest, best beloved One
From evil to divest thee
He left His Heav'nly Throne
For sinners to atone
He burst our chains asunder
And cured the curse we labored under
Oh, what a wondrous deed!
That One from His exalted station
Became a man, to bleed
For lowly man's salvation
In Jesus' meekness is my hope
As he was poor so I have plenty
He chose a state of low degree
And yet from sin He set me free
And lo, his magic Hand for me
Will wreath a blessed crown of glory
4. Recitativo (Tenore): Du teurer Gottesohn
5. Choral (Coro): Heut schleußt er wieder auf die Tür
