CDLI. MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus (1756-1791)
Four days.
That's how long it took the genius to compose this masterpiece. On his way home to Vienna, the 27-year-old Mozart stopped in Linz (the sobriquet given to the symphony) where the local Count quickly organized a concert.
First movement
The opening Adagio -- the harmony is all over the place and doesn't cadence to C Major until

The beginning of the development section is lightly scored, with quick cadences in A Minor then F Major:
Mozart's slow movements can't be beat for simple, majestic beauty. This one -- in the subdominant, F Major, in an undulating Siciliano rhythm -- is characterized by a lilting opening phrase which is ornamented by fast trills:

Standard -- but lovely -- minuet and trio:

A presto Rondo.

Development in the dominant. The violins play an arpeggiated G Major chord, but Mozart quickly moves into new harmonic territory -- featuring a clever modulation to A Minor (red arrow); a German Sixth back to G (blue) and finally a return to the tonic (green) ...
