CDXXXIV. NANCARROW, Conlon (1912-1997)
Study for Player Piano #29 (1948-60)
(4:25)
At some point after 1948, Nancarrow heard John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes (1946-48) for prepared piano. Unfortunately -- as Nancarrow was using an upright at the time, with no way to prepare the strings -- he gave up the idea.
This Study involves the juxtaposition and superimposition (in up to seven voices) of different but momentarily constant tempi, expressed by repeated note figures on (momentarily) fixed pitches.
