The Écossaise is a Scottish dance -- that originated in France. In duple time, the men faced the women, and danced as couples towards the front of the line. Popular from the late 1700's to the early 1800's, Debussy here revives it with a plain tune, upon which he embellishes it delightfully, with a flowery introduction.

The tune is introduced simply with minimal accompaniment:
