DXXXV. HOVHANESS, Alan (1911-2000)
Alleluia and Fugue, Op. 40b (1941)
Seattle Symphony Orchestra
Gerard Schwarz, cond.
(9:20)
The lush sonic landscape of Alan Hovhaness -- the great prolific 20th-century Armenian-American composer -- is achieved here by splitting the violins into six separate parts and the celli in two. An unrelenting Renaissance/Baroque vibe sets in motion the feeling of universality.
The fugue is a strict five-voice affair, with a subtle countersubject.
