DLXIV. MILHAUD, Darius (1892-1974)
Le Printemps, Op. 18 (1914)
Mauro Tortorelli, violin
Angela Meluso, piano
[scrolling score]
(2:29)
Here the young Milhaud tries his hand at the pièce caractéristique -- or let's just say "impressionistic."
Using whole-tone scales -- still a novelty in 1914 -- and a 5/8 rhythm, Milhaud succeeds in describing spring as beautifully as you can imagine. Perhaps he had heard Debussy's 1912 version. In any event, the two works are very different.
