DCXLIV. BARTÓK, Béla (1881-1945)
Unrequited love. Bartók was in love with the violinist Stefi Geyer, but she didn't return the feelings; nor did she accept his lovely gift of this composition, which was dedicated to her.
Unbelievably, it was never performed during Bartók's lifetime.
First movement
The soloist opens the work with an arpeggiated D Major Seventh chord -- D, F#, A, and C# ... this creates consecutive intervals of Major Third, Minor Third, and another Major Third, which intervallic relationships Bartók manipulates throughout the movement:
