DCXXXVIII. ÞORVALDSDÓTTIR, Anna: Ró

DCXXXVIII. ÞORVALDSDÓTTIR, Anna (1977-       )

In the Todd Field's film Tár (2022), this is the piece that is being "performed" by a group of Juilliard students. Lydia seems to put down the music, saying:

"It must be a pleasure to preside over a bed of strings who behave as if they're tuning ..."

In the film, she is interviewed by The New Yorker's Adam Gopnik (playing himself) and she seems to champion modern music (especially by female composers). Why the put-down? Perhaps to humble the student conductor, Max (Zethphan Smith-Gneist) ...

This chamber piece -- for bass flute, bass clarinet, percussion, piano, two violins, viola and cello -- is gorgeous.

Shame on the Mahler-exert Lydia!

(Of course, the score for Tár was composed by fellow-Icelander Hildur Guðnadóttir.)
