Mozart's swan song, his very last complete composition.

His long-standing friendship with the clarinetist Anton Stadler gave us the supremely gorgeous Clarinet Quintet, K. 581 (1789) and this concerto -- originally written for the basset horn.

Thus, I include a performance on that instrument, although since no autograph manuscript survives, Pickup is playing the posthumous score, which was altered for the normal clarinet, which lacks the four lower notes that the basset horn was capable of playing ...
