Subtitled "The Collective Farm," Myaskovsky composed this symphony for the 15th anniversary of the October Revolution.
Supposedly, the three movements were meant to represent the sufferings of the peasants under Tsarism. When Myaskovsky learned of the true bloody realities, he withdrew the programme -- but the symphony stands on its own, in any case.
First movement
A lovely clarinet solo sets the pastoral mood. There follows an amazing fugato on a chromatic development of a folk theme:

A polyphonic tour-de-force:
Third movement
Festive, but complex.
