Das Augenlicht, Op. 26 (1935)
BBC Singers
Berlin Philharmonic
Pierre Boulez, cond.
(5:38)

The poetry of Hildegard Jone would provide Webern with his texts for all his future choral works (Cantatas 1 ['38] & 2 ['41]) ...

In addition to the SATB choir, the orchestra is composed of flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, percussion, harp, celeste, mandolin, 8 violins, 4 violas, and 4 celli.

Das Augenlicht (The Eyes' Radiance)

Through our open eyes light flows into the heart
And streams gently back from them as joy
In love's gaze, more wells forth than ever entered
What has happened when the eyes shine?
They must reveal to us something very wonderful:
That a man's inmost self has become a heaven
With as many stars as brighten the night
With a sun that wakens the day

O sea of glances, with its surf of tears!
The drops which it sprays on the blades of your eyelids
Are shone upon by the heart and the sun
When the night of your eyelids silently descends
Upon your depths, your waters wash against
Those of death: it gently takes with it
The treasures of your depths gained by day
Yet from its unfathomable dark depths
When day rises with your lids
Many of its miracles have surfaced anew
In your glance, and that makes it good
