CMXV. BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van: Die Liebe, Op. 52, No. 6

CMXV. BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van (1770-1827)

Die Liebe (ca. 1790)
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone
Jörg Demus, piano
(1:15)

This poem by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing [incredible! discovered Archimedes' cattle problem {though he couldn't solve it!} ... also close friend of Moses Mendelssohn ...] seems tailor-made for poor Beethoven's love life:

Let him who can
Live without love!
Though he remain a human being
He's nonetheless no man

Sweet love
Make my life sweet
Satisfy all ardent desires
Without resistance

Fair women's duty is
To make us pine
Only let it not be
To make us pine eternally
