The Stabat Mater is a Christian hymn which dates back to the 13th century.
Haydn's setting is magnificent. No spritely gavottes, nor bat-out-of-hell rondo finales -- but a serious vocal work with terrific writing for the soloists.
There is a constant strain of chromaticism which weaves through the work; there are typically impeccable fugues; nice short cadenzas.
This is an important work in the sacred large-force vocal work tradition of the 18th century ...
