I attended Juilliard for two weeks before I was nearly killed by a drunk driver, and laid up for six months.

But what a two weeks!

I had composition lessons with Elliot Carter, Vincent Persichetti, Roger Sessions, Jacob Druckman -- and -- Luciano Berio.

He had only recently added the Fifth movement, and his manuscript paper was tacked onto the walls of his office.

The premiere recording with The Swingle Singers and Berio conducting the New York Philharmonic is on YouTube in four separate sections (he had not yet finished the Fifth Movement):

  1. First Movement
  2. Second Movement
  3. Third Movement
  4. Fourth Movement
One of the female Swingle Singers gives you a hint about the origin of the Third Movement, near the very beginning:

"Deuxième Symphonie -- Troisieme Partie" (Mahler)
