XCV. MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus (1756-1791)
Mozart wrote his last three symphonies very quickly during the summer of 1788. Nikolaus Harnoncourt thoughtfully suggests that the three from a symphonic trilogy (based on the idea of this symphony's grand overture-introduction and its lack of a coda. The idea does make some sense, as #40 lacks the kind of grand-ending finale of #41.)
This conductorless ensemble of very young people plays standing up (except for the French horns and celli) and they quite capable; nuance and shading is in evidence and they play with great spirit.
