The fine line between composer and arranger is nowhere more evident than in this particular case.
Hindemith put together one of the first early music ensembles during his tenure at Yale University. Included in the edition published by Pierre d'Attaignant (1547-57) as Livres de Dancieries were works by Claude Gervaise and Estienne du Tretre.
Hindemith took the music and -- without changing a note -- arranged them for a unique ensemble of winds, trumpet and lower strings. [Hindemith was a violist, and here the instrument is featured in parts divisi a 3 ...]
The dances themelves are all charming, and a mere arranger without the skills of a Hindemith would never have produced anything so compelling:
1. Pavane und Gaillarde
2. Tourdion
Literally, "the twist." Shake it up, baby ...
3. Bransle simple
4. Bransle de Bourgongne
5. Bransle simple
6. Bransle d"Escosse
7. Pavane, wie am Anfang
